Besides Hanauma Bay and Shark’s Cove

Everyone who comes to Hawaii has Hanauma Bay on their list. Serious snorkelers will also make a stop at Shark’s Cove during their stay on Oahu. But both of these hot spots are often crowded due to their popularity. Here are my favorite hidden gem snorkel spots.

Kahe Point Beach Park – Locally, we call this place Electric Beach because it’s right by Kahe Powerplant. The coolant system releases warm water that attracts a numerous amount of sea life.

Intermediate and advanced snorkelers and swimmers only.

Extra tip: Popular dolphin hangout!

Kaena Point State Park – Not as many fish as other snorkel spots, but the water is very clear allowing a great view of the sea life. You’ll also have access to a long stretch of white sand with only a spattering of other people. Kids will have a hard time in the water here on windy days.

Kuilima Cove – Located in Turtle Bay Resort and protected by a natural rock barrier, this spot is perfect for beginners with plenty of fish and even a turtle or two.

Kaiona Beach Park – Head here if Hanauma Bay is crowded since it’s only another 10 minutes further. Also goes by the name of Honu Heaven because of all the turtles that hang out here.

Makaha Beach Park – For advanced snorkelers as this requires about a 100 meter swim. You’ll find a lot of turtles in this area (just follow the underwater cables for the turtle cleaning station), but the best part is the shore break where you can find a lot of sea shells. Come during calm weather only from April thru September.
